The questions I get asked most, and the ones I wish I'd known to ask. Short answers here, with links to the full page for each. If you want your own dates worked out, try the Twin Deadline Planner.

Money and rights

Do you get double maternity pay for twins?

No. Statutory Maternity Pay is per pregnancy, not per baby, so twins get one lot of 39 weeks' pay. Twins Trust is campaigning to change this. See Rights & Support.

Is there any extra leave for twins?

Yes, and most people never hear about it. Unpaid parental leave is 18 weeks per child, for each parent, so twins mean 36 weeks each. It's a day-one right since April 2026. You can usually take up to 4 weeks a year per child, and you give 21 days' notice.

Does maternity leave start when they come home from NICU?

No. If the twins arrive before your planned start date, your leave starts automatically the day after they're born. If a baby goes into neonatal care within 28 days of birth and stays at least 7 full days, you can get up to 12 extra weeks of Neonatal Care Leave. The catch: it's per pregnancy, so if both twins are in care at the same time, the days only count once. Mine were in for 24 hours, so it didn't apply to me.

How much Child Benefit do you get for twins?

For 2026–27 it's £27.05 a week for your eldest or only child and £17.90 for each child after that. If the twins are your first, one gets the higher rate and one the lower. Claim within 3 months of the birth, because it only backdates 3 months. Claim even if you earn over £60,000: it protects your National Insurance record.

Can I get the Sure Start Maternity Grant for twins?

If you or your partner get certain benefits, such as Universal Credit, probably. If the twins are your first children, it's £500 for each twin, so £1,000. If you already have children under 16, it's usually £500 for the twins, and nothing if you've had twins before. Claim from 11 weeks before the due date until the twins are 6 months old. Scotland has its own payment instead, the Pregnancy and Baby Payment.

What help is there with childcare costs?

Tax-Free Childcare adds £2 for every £8 you pay in, up to £2,000 a year per child, so up to £4,000 for twins. You can't use it at the same time as Universal Credit, so check which works out better. In England, working parents can get funded hours from the term after the twins turn 9 months, and every family gets 15 hours from the term after they turn 3.

Has the two-child limit gone?

Yes. The two-child limit on Universal Credit ended on 6 April 2026, so you can now get the child element for every child. The benefit cap still applies. If you were put off claiming before, it's worth checking again.

Can twins start in the same Reception class if it's full?

In England, infant classes are capped at 30, but a twin counts as an "excepted pupil" if their twin got the last place, so the school can go over 30 for them. Check what your council's admissions policy says about twins. Applications for a September start close on 15 January.

The early days

Are twins usually born early?

Around 60% of twins arrive early. Mine came at 34 weeks and spent 24 hours in NICU. See Twin Pregnancy and Bringing Them Home.

Should I wake both babies for feeds?

I did, every single feed. It was the only way I could keep a schedule with two, and mine are still on the same one. Follow what your midwife or health visitor tells you about feeding times for your babies. See Tips & Tricks, and there's a free feeding tracker on Bringing Them Home.

Can twins sleep together?

Mine slept far better once they were together. Check The Lullaby Trust's guidance on twins and safe sleep for your babies' age and weight before you decide. See The Twin Sleep Journey.

Is it normal not to feel joy straight away?

Yes. Joy needs sleep, headspace and feeling safe. If you're struggling, talk to your GP or health visitor, contact PANDAS on WhatsApp (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, details on their website), or call Samaritans any time on 116 123. See PND & Mental Health.

When does it get easier?

Weaning was a genuine turning point for us. Sleep only felt truly reliable approaching three. It does come back together, I promise.
